Project Case Study: St. Peter’s Church
A Kimgres Collaboration with St. Peter’s Church, Padungan, Kuching
33,797 Custom-Made Tiles | Gothic-Inspired Landmark | Kuching, Sarawak
Standing as both a place of worship and a pillar of Kuching’s Catholic heritage, St. Peter’s Church is a testament to faith, legacy, and renewal. Since its founding in 1949, the church has served generations of believers—growing, evolving, and now rising once more with a new Gothic-inspired design that echoes the grandeur of Europe’s most revered cathedrals.
As the structure reaches new architectural heights, so too does its interior—where every detail has been shaped with purpose. At the heart of this sacred transformation is a flooring masterpiece: 33,797 custom tiles, crafted exclusively by Kimgres to honour tradition through the language of surface, pattern, and devotion.
The Collaboration: Kimgres × St. Peter's Church
This partnership was born from a shared reverence—for heritage, for artistry, and for the spirit of place. In close collaboration with the church Rector, interior designers, and local artisans, Kimgres delivered bespoke floor tiles that do more than complete a space—they elevate it into a sanctified experience.
Commissioned through our Bespoke Customisation Service, the tiles were carefully conceptualised, produced, and installed over a six-year journey, beginning in May 2018 and culminating in November 2024. Each tile reflects not only craftsmanship but also faith—uniting design precision with spiritual symbolism.
A Journey Through Sacred Surfaces
Main Aisle & Nave
Custom Intricate Patterns
Throughout the sanctuary, elaborate tile motifs stretch across the floors like woven fabric—delicate yet enduring. These designs ground the church’s towering Gothic elements in intimate, human-scaled beauty, guiding worshippers gently through the spiritual journey from nave to altar.
IHS Star Motif
Entrance Emblem with the Christogram “IHS”
The first step into St. Peter’s reveals a sacred symbol in tile: the IHS star motif, a radiant emblem proclaiming “Jesus, Saviour of Mankind.” Encircled by a star, the stylised Christogram honours centuries of Christian tradition and draws the eyes—and hearts—toward divine presence. Every angle and curve is rendered with care, becoming both focal point and act of devotion.
Chapel & Side Altars
Subtle Elegance in Tone and Texture
In these quieter spaces of prayer, the tiles take on a softer voice—neutral hues and flowing patterns create a gentle backdrop for reflection. Here, design whispers rather than declares, allowing light and silence to become part of the worship experience.
Honouring Heritage Through Craftsmanship
St. Peter’s Church is more than brick and mortar—it is a memory, mission, and spiritual home. From its humble beginnings on reclaimed swampland in 1937 to its transformation into one of Sarawak’s most iconic religious landmarks, its story is one of resilience, growth, and grace.
Kimgres is honoured to contribute to this chapter of renewal. Our tiles are not mere materials; they are vessels of culture, carriers of tradition, and silent companions to thousands of footsteps, prayers, and moments shared in faith.
The new church stands ready to welcome over 1,000 worshippers into a space that unites Gothic grandeur with local identity. With stained glass windows depicting native motifs and sacred narratives, soaring spires, and expansive halls—it is both a beacon of architectural excellence and a sanctuary of community.
